Transition Planning

OSHS Greyhound Ambassadors

The Greyhound Ambassadors represent the faculty, student body, and community as the official student liaisons of Ocean Springs High School. Being selected as a Greyhound Ambassador places students in a leadership role where they will be expected to promote a high standard of character and demonstrate effective communication skills.  Greyhound Ambassadors will also be the group that provides the greatest amount of service to our school and community.

Ambassadors assist students throughout the year with transitioning into the OSHS community throughout the year. Assignments for mentees will be made through the counselors offices. Your duties will include but are not limited to assisting students by providing tours of the school buildings, interacting with mentees at school events, inviting new students to club fairs and other school sponsored events that provide opportunities for community involvement, and helping the new students familiarize themselves with how to make appointments with their counselors, including our military family counselor for military family students.

Greyhound Ambassador Testimonies

Testimony #1:
Jane (not real name) transferred to Ocean Springs from Illinois as an 11th grader. Her father was a member of the U.S. Navy. Jane had lived in Japan and California for most of her life and was not happy living in Mississippi. Upon the move here, her parents divorced which added to her difficult adjustment. Her Greyhound Ambassador brought her to the Career Center and would eat lunch with her daily. She began to meet other students during her lunch breaks who would discuss college goals. Jane had her heart set on attending college out of state but learned about all the opportunities she had at Mississippi universities. Jane was able to earn a full tuition and fees and housing scholarship for 4 years at Mississippi State University and the prestigious James Patterson Scholarship. Jane is finishing her degree in education and hopes to return to OSHS be an English and Spanish teacher and to help other students from military families. Jane told me that she couldn't believe that a school she was so determined to not like would be the place that helped her accomplish her dreams of becoming a teacher.

Testimony #2:
Adam transferred to OSHS from Texas in 10th grade. He was very quiet and his ambassador actually had difficulty having conversations with him. His ambassador continued including him as much as possible because they did have the same lunch period. His ambassador enlisted the help of some of the other ambassadors because Adam tended to want to be alone. Eventually Adam became friends with an ambassador who was not assigned to him. He joined the Computer Science Coding club and participated in a local competition where the OSHS team won first place. He is attending college and majoring in Computer Science.
