As your Army Instructor, it is my sincere pleasure to work with our dedicated staff and community to help provide an excellent educational experience for our students. We are committed to ensuring that your children receive the best support to learn and grow.
As the Army JROTC Instructor, I am responsible for creating a positive culture and safe learning environment in the classroom, that will ultimately promote optimal academic outcomes. At Ocean Springs High School, I work alongside the Senior JROTC instructor and teachers in promoting student intellectual, social, patriotic, character education, and physical growth.
In JROTC, our most valuable asset is our cadets. Cultivating a culture where everyone can learn and grow, be recognized, and feel a part of the school family is essential. In JROTC, we have a dedicated Leadership Team to maintain a positive climate while holding one another accountable provides structure and a place that is ripe for growth.
COL (R) Steven Farragut, Senior Army Instructor
Colonel (Retired) Steven W. Farragut began his military career in September 1982, enlisting in the Mississippi Army National Guard’s Detachment 1, 1065th General Supply Company, Biloxi, MS. He attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, SC in the summer of 1983. He entered into the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) while attending the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS and received his commission in May of 1985. Since his commissioning, COL (R) Farragut has served in various units and positions of increasing responsibilities on Active Duty and the Mississippi Army National Guard.
COL (R) Farragut has served as a Platoon Leader, Detachment Commander, Company Commander, Battalion S-1 Officer, Battalion Executive/Operations Officer, Corps Staff Officer, and Commander of a Regional Maintenance Training School, Group Logistics Officer, and Director of Host Nations. He served as Chief of Current Operations for Logistics for the Coalitions Forces while attached to 3rd Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom. His units include 1/1065th GS Co, XVIII Airborne Corps, 5/8th FA, 1355th GS Co, 138th Supply and Service Company, Regional Training Site, Camp Shelby, 1108th AVCRAD, 210th Finance Battalion and finally the 114th Area Support Group, Hattiesburg, MS.
COL (R) Farragut has received numerous awards throughout his military and civilian careers to include four Meritorious Service Medals, seven Army Commendation Medals, two Humanitarian Defense Service Medals, the Global War on Terrorism and the Humanitarian Service Medal, Mississippi Magnolia Cross and two Mississippi Magnolia Medals as well as other commendation and service medals. In 2009, he was selected as JROTC Senior Army Instructor of the year for Mississippi and selected as Teacher of the Year for Ocean Springs High School, SY 2011-2012.
COL (R) Farragut’s civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Southern MS, a Masters of Business Administration, Masters of Secondary Education Degrees and a Specialist in Education Leadership from William Carey College. His military education includes qualifications in Quartermaster, Ordnance, Finance, Multi-Functional Logistician, and Transportation. He completed the Army’s Command and General Staff Officer Course.
COL (R) Farragut is married to the former Jenny Hearn of Laurel, MS. They have two children and five grandchildren.
COL (R) Farragut began a second career as the Senior Army Instructor for Ocean Springs High Junior Reserve Officer Corps (JROTC). HOOAH!!!
